MOODS

First of all, I'm always in the mood for Henrik. He's by far, my favorite photographer. Right now, I'm particularly drawn to the rawness of an image. Wet hair on hot summer skin, the ripples in a pool and the raw organic pattern they create, bright colors as they relate to the fruitfulness of spring/summer, the look of sun-dried hair after its been soaked in a chlorine filled pool or the salty ocean waves.

Maybe all this steamed from the current snow situation Denver has been graced with (ughhhhhhh). Or it could be that I want what I simply cannot have... But for the sake of art, I think it has something to do with the easiness of summer and the essence of youth that follows. Sun kissed skin, puffy just-took-a-nap-on-my-tummy-eyes, undone, snarled hair. The dewy wet, youthful make-up look. The natural use of negative space at a pool or a beach. It relays so interesting on film. Love it.

Out To Lunch, Back Soon,

XOXO Anna

The Wild West Coaster

FEATURING; Stephanie Ford

GUEST STARRING; Francis and Jerry (They're 18, right Kelly??)

IMG_5609.jpg

Stephanie Ford and i have recently discovered that we collaborate very well together. As the season comes to an end we begin to shed our summer skin. Days begin to shorten, the air becomes brisk- Fall is the best time of year, not only because the trees are decorated with my favorite color, but because it represents a time of transition. As of recently, "transition" could not be anymore real to me. When life strips us of all that is comfortable, we become vunerable, fragile. Much like the weakening of a tree's luscious chlorophyll, if you step back and look, the change can be quite lovely.

So let us shed our Fall splendor! Ford and i are throwing an end-of-summer-pop-up-garage-sale on Sunday, August 28th from 11am-3pm. Come hang with us near City Park, in the alley between Fillmore and Detroit Street right off 17th Avenue. Score great prices on TRESS jewelry, thrifty boho finds, precious vintage goods, succulant plants, unique imported textiles, coffee beans and more! There is free parking in both lots in the alley.

The Call

FEATURING; Sara Colley

"As this dream comes to life, it seems as if everything comfortable in my life has been stripped away. My heart has been wrung and tried so deep this year. But i have an amazing community- which i believe grows from the courage within vulnerability. It is so hard but there is so much beauty within vulnerability- These girls in France don't have this. We need to be their voices. We need to stand in the gap for them. Their is freedom to be found- and i hope this project is only the beginning of it"

-Sara Colley

  Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Lately it seems like I can't turn on the news with out feeling quite hopeless. In a world filled with dark, people forget to see the light. But not so for my dear friend and colleague Sara Colley- One of the most empathetic and genuine souls I know. Sara reminds me everyday that the world we live in is just a microscopic portion of our truth. How she is able to carry all this truth and still perform in everyday life is beyond me. The areas we are able to shed light are vastly deeper than the eye can see and our ability to contribute starts by asking questions...

IMG_5085.jpg

Sara "birthed" her nonprofit, The Call Project, from her long time dream of combining her love for hairdressing with her heart to fight human trafficking. After journeying to The South of France, Sara's vision became a reality. There, she partnered with Justice Acts- a nonprofit organization based in The South of France. Their goal is to train people holistically through education and prevention. After collaborating with Colley, together they plan to commence "after-care" training to women who have been trafficked. Through The Call Project, these women will have access to Hair School where they will be educated by talented hairdressers from all over the world. By learning a trade, these women will find hope and become empowered for their future.

Rising Strong by Brene Brown, click the picture to get your own copy!

As Brene Brown says, "The middle is messy, but it's also where the magic happens". I've never known words to be more true. Sara gave me my first copy of "Rising Strong" by Brene Brown. Inside the cover it read, "Anna, your story is beautiful and i am so proud of you. Own your journey and rise to your truth," It changed my life. But in light of spreading the love, i passed it along to the next soul in need. I encourage you to buy your own copy and continue to pay it forward. Tell a strong woman in your life that she is beautiful. She is capable. And her story is her own.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

FEATURING; Janessa O'Fallon

  Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Ohhhh sweet writer's block! The morning of a photoshoot and I'm still dancing around three different themes, three different titles, and 300 excuses why I'm not ready to write. Classic procrastination. Yet, somehow, i don't quite view procrastination as a bad thing. I think of it as, "My Illusive Creative Genius" (Elizabeth Gilbert) trying to surface; because all of the sudden, like some kind of clairvoyant vision, it expels out of me, and all the dots are connected. Does anyone else feel this way? Or is it just me?

The opportunity to work with Janessa O'Fallon came up a couple weeks ago while she was at the salon. It's strange how things line up; I needed a muse, she had some free time, but for the first time since writing this blog i was drawing blanks. Janessa is beautiful and talented and could easily make anything work, but somehow, nothing was working for me. Nothing felt right. You might say, it was starting to torture me.

What tortures you as an artist? How do you channel your ideas? I'm starting to believe that writers block is just a preconceived idea that is so genius, it just needs a little extra time to cook.

Below is one of Janessa's coffee house performances. Here she covers Nude by Radiohead.

  • This musical vixen is Janessa O'Fallon. A singer/song writer from Denver, Colorado. Janessa is one of those people who walks into a room and everything stops as the crowd's attention turns her way. Personally, I cower and cripple at the thought of people singing "Happy Birthday" to me. But not so for Janessa. She is unfazed, unaware people are watching. She's a bundle of sparkling energy and an easy feeling of cool wrapped in an enticing layer of mystery. You must meet her, you must learn more.
  • Her band includes her drummer and husband, Patrick O'Fallon. They are currently working on recording their latest album, which will be released in the fall. You can hear her music and get updates on her latest album at www.janessaofallon.com! Below is a cover of Aerosmith's, Blind Man which she preformed improv and totally unprepared. To my dismay, Janessa felt this wasn't "her best", however, seeing that i asked her to sing on the spot, she had just been watching a Steven Tyler documentary prior to my arrival and this is one of her "sloppier" performances???? Goosebumps.

Year of The Fire Monkey

FEATURING; Sarah Bustamento & Walter

  Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

  • According to the Chinese Zodiac cycle, we are in the midst of the Year of The Fire Monkey. The year of the monkey begins on February 8th and ends on January 17th. The personality traits of the monkey include wit, intellect and curiosity. However, traits such as mischievousness, cleverness and playfulness make them very "naughty" creatures. Use these traits in your favor- for these traits make for a playful year. It is opportune to take risks and break rules. Taking advantage of crafty opportunities will work in your favor, for monkeys are fast learners. With this- be careful how you play. Gambling in an illegal or greedy manor will quickly become a dicey situation. Know the rules & then learn how you can break them.
  • This beautiful geisha is my colleague, mentor & MOST importantly my friend. Sarah is always put together, but somehow even when she’s not, she has a timeless, undone and striking look about her. Even when she’s running late- she runs into the salon, wind blown, her long shiny locks perfectly tousled and undone, dressed in a slouchy bohemian dress (mind you- she literally rolled out of bed and threw on) & ALWAYS in a pair of heels; and somehow, she looks perfect, unfazed, business as usual. Sarah is charismatic, outspoken (in a genuine kind-of-way), and has a very defined sense of style. What i admire most about her, is her ability to speak with her clients honestly, delivering exactly what they asked for and somehow is still able to add her signature touch.

  • Sara’s cute little co-star is her brand new puppy, Walter. I selectively choose her to star in this specific feature, as Sarah has encountered significant change in her life. As a fellow “creature of habit”, change is not always embraced. However, from my personal experience, change is not only inevitable but it is also out of our control. Much like fighting a rip current, sometimes our only option is to give up the fight and swim alongside it. In other words, there is beauty in the break down.

I recreated these shorts based off a pair of pants I fell in love with and was consequently devastated to find that they were WAY over priced.

I used a pair of old high waisted Levi cut offs, standard bright white "puff paint" (available at any craft store) and a star stencil. Find yourself a paint brush and paint stars randomly.

These shorts (including supplies) cost me a total of roughly $25. However, they saved me a total of roughly $200... Making them priceless!

The Creature of Comfort

FEATURING; Maggie McCutchan

  Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Those of you who know me well have probably been wondering when I would do a Marie Antionette concept. Well here it is. I managed to produce a summer-themed, bikini-wearing, macaroon-endorsing, beer-drinking, modern spin on my girl Marie Antionette.Yes, this ended in a cake fight and, yes, we both had stomach aches.

IMG_3115.jpg

Those of you who know Maggie well, know she's an old soul. Friends fondly refer to her as the "creature of comfort". This is a woman who loves a casual beer at the end of the day, on her front porch, in her slippers, watching the neighborhood wind down.

I’ve known this chick a long time. I'm talking wayyyyy back to Barney days. Maggie and I grew up next door to each other. I remember going over to her house after school and being delightfully confounded by her preference for the 5 o'clock news over our regularly scheduled programs on Nickelodeon. But don't let her geriatric preferences deceive you--Maggie is a goofball. When I picture her in my head, all I can see (and hear) is that signature belly laugh:  leaned back, clutching her stomach and crippled from laughter. Along with being my first locker partner ever, Maggie was one of my original partners in crime. I won't go into all the details of the shenanigans we got into but, suffice it to say, I got sent home for bad behavior on several occasions (sorry John and Denise!!). All these years later, this weirdo still gets me laughing until tears.

FEATURING; Mckinzie Froese

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

If you haven't seen this movie, it's probably hard for you to understand how I came up with the concept to represent our new Electric West T-shirts- Or how the first chick I had in mind was sweet Mckinzie Froese.

image.jpg
image.jpg
image.jpg

Mckinzie, also known as Kinzie, is a anthropology/archeology student at CU Denver. Kinzie is quiet and calm when first meeting her. She's a bit of a tomboy, soft spoken, with a "go with the flow" attitude. Like most adventurous Colorado girls, once comfortable, she's got an inner wild side.

Electric West is a California based, vintage inspired, southwestern influenced T-shirt company. Arriving just in time for your summer wardrobe. The fit is oversized- which is perfect to tie up as a crop or to distress. I would even venture to buy an extra large, cut off the sleeves and wear it as a swimming suit cover up. But that's me- Wear it how you want. Be creative. Be comfortable.

•Do you remember when you were a kid and the morning of The Fourth felt like Christmas in July? The golden glow peaked in through your window, the sound of a lawn mower vibrates in the distance, your inner pyromaniac anticipates the joy to come. That feeling, that excitement… I believe that’s what Jennifer Coolidge was talking about in Legally Blonde when she said “You look like the fourth of July, makes me want a hot dog real bad!”

•This Georgia grown peach answers to, Stephanie Ford. She's the brains behind TRESS jewelry. Her hand crafted jewelry has been sold via Etsy since 2013- although, her aesthetic has evolved overtime. Her skill as a designer relays clear, clean and attractive to the consumer.

•To me, Stephanie reeks of that good ol’ southern charm. She lights up a room with electric, smiling energy. Photographing her is like stepping into a nostalgic portal. She’s confident and cognizant of her unique look. It's mastered- a direct reflection of her jewelry.

•Stephanie describes some of her favorite memories from the Fourth of July. Like most people from the south, she beams about her mother’s cooking, particularly the Mac’n Cheese. Picnicking in Marietta, GA with friends and family & as a fellow child of the 90's, hearing her dad blast a little Bruce Springteen, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton.... You get the gist.

The Whiskey Wanderer

 FEATURING ; Lauren Roberts

•Cabin fever, mind wandering, anxious to be outside, fighting a persistent battle with wanderlust, feeling extra creative/inspired/motivated?

 Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

Hair/design/photography by Anna Embry @annaembryyy

•Lauren and I became great friends while catering for fancy events at the Denver Art Museum and the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Long hours, nearly bored to tears, working coat check till 3 a.m. is when we really bonded. Passing time with conversations about art, music, and dreams of traveling to Europe with a journal and a "yes man" type attitude.

•Lauren is a realism artist and some of my favorite pieces from her collection are done in oil paint or chalk. She's going to grad school in Santa Fe this fall and hopes to become an art therapist one day. I've always admired her courage, her willingness to try new things, to meet new people and her unwavering aversion to definite plans.

•Lauren is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime. Her adventure will begin in Italy and end on a 4 day walking tour on the coast of Ireland. In order for Lauren to prep for her trip, she has transformed into a minimalist—a task that sounds absolutely daunting to me right now. But not so for Lauren. In fact, her energy—so light and free—has me both intrigued and inspired to elaborate on this lifestyle.

image.jpg

•Is it weird that I'm channeling Huckleberry Finn for this look? While Mark Twain's actual character may have been portrayed as "suspect" at times and certainly has no real reflection of Lauren's actual character or dialogue, Im attempting to capture the adventurous, daring, and dreamy imagery of Mr. Finn.

•Braids can be easily achieved especially if you enhance your natural wave with a diffuser and a little "blow and set". When dry, Scrunch in a little "beach day" (a light weight sea salt spray for some extra grip and texture). Spray a little "texturiza" volume-in texture spray, for some extra volume and separation. Finally, separate hair into two sections and braid two Dutch braids at the nape of your neck. Wrap them up and over the top of your head. Pin and secure where needed. As a finishing touch, define and piece out parts of your braid with "second day" defining paste.

•All featured hair products are manufactured by Unite, & can be found at any of The Parlour locations- The Parlour in the highlands is convienently located just up the street from Secondlove, on the corner of 32nd and Meade.
